The origins of the term ‘empathy’ go back to the beginning of the 20th century, when the foundation of analyses of the phenomenon were philosophical (phenomenological) deliberations on the issue of getting to know mental states of other people. The first psychologist to draw on achievements of phenomenologists and to use the term Die Einfühlung was Theodor Lipps (Lipps 1897). In the Anglo-Saxon literature the term was translated as ‘empathy’, sharing another person’s emotions. In our times, in pedagogy and psychotherapy, significant findings on empathy were made by Carl Rogers (1975), a personality psychologist. To describe important spiritual and philosophical issues Edith Stein used a symbol. The reason was her aesthetical sensitivity, but also, to some extent, her method of the phenomenological view. The definitions of the symbol used by the philosopher in the writings were introduced in the beginning. However, the main purpose of this article is the analysis of the symbolic stone. Recalling the context in the writings of Edith Stein and other texts that influenced her, one can find out that through these images she gets to the essence of all important aspects of the human being. La ricerca si propone di analizzare puntualmente la categoria steiniana dell’Einfühlung per farne una chiave di accesso al pensiero della fenomenologa, capace di attraversarlo nel suo complesso e di mostrarne gli aspetti più originali. Le questioni problematiche che si intersecano con l’indagine sono la riflessione sul controverso rapporto Husserl-Stein e sulla possibilità d’istituire sul piano filosofico un parallelismo analogico tra il vissuto empatico e l’esperienza mistica.
